PASSED HAND BIDDING

 
  If you do not open the bidding then your hand has an upper 
limit of 12 points.  But this does not mean that you can not bid 
at a later date. Even after you have passed you can still enter the 
bidding with an overcall, or a take-out double. And or course you can still respond to your partner’s opening bid with 6 or more points. The only difference is that after you pass your partner knows your hand’s upper limit. 

The Maxi Pass
The Maxi Pass is a hand with 10, 11 or 12 points. Or maybe 13 points if  you re-evaluate your hand in the light of the bidding. If you make a take-out double or an overcall after you pass then you should have a Maxi Pass. If your partner opens the bidding after you pass, then a good way to show a Maxi is to jump in No Trump or in a new suit.

 
  In EXAMPLES 1 - 4 after you pass your partner opens 1 D.  Opponents pass throughout. 

w   In EXAMPLE 1 show the Maxi by jumping to 2 S. Jump to 2 No Trump. 

w   In EXAMPLE 2. This is a typical 2 No Trump response: 10 to 12 HCPs; a balanced hand; and no five card Major. 

w   In EXAMPLE 3 bid 1 H (majors up the ladder) and hope that partner rebids so that you can continue. 

w   In EXAMPLE 4 bid 1 No Trump. A standard response. 
 

In EXAMPLES 5 - 7 you pass, your LHO passes, your partner passes and your HRO opens 1 H

w   Double in EXAMPLE 5. You have support in the other three suits and a Maxi.

w   In EXAMPLE 6 bid 1 H. A Maxi with a five card suit with two honors. 

w   Pass in EXAMPLE 7.  Maybe your partner can come up with a bid..
