Caveat
Emptor means “buyer
beware”. Emptor means “buyer”. If the prefix pre
is
put before emptor then pre-emptor means to ""buy before".
During auctions or sales to buy before anyone else was very
advantageous.
It was a win over the other buyers. So the word pre-empt
has
come to mean to win by striking first. (During a war, a news broadcast
might have reported: “Pre-emptive raids destroyed the enemy air force
on
the ground.”)

w Do not pre-empt with 13+ points. Open the biding at the one level. Even with a very long suit. w Sometimes you can get a better score by not making the hand, playing in your suit, then by letting the opponents make the hand in their suit. |
