REDOUBLES

A Redouble is a Call. (See CALL.) Just as with the Call of a Double, it is possible to Redouble a contract into game. One of a Minor Doubled / Redoubled (D/R) is not game (1 x 2 x 2 = 4). But one of a Major, or one No Trump, D/R is Game. Two of a Minor D / R is Game. (2 x 2 x 2 = 6). Under tricks D/ R is twice the amount of Doubled under tricks. Example: 3 Spades D / R vulnerable down two is 1000 points. (500 x 2). Today, however, very few contracts are played at D / R. The Redouble has a conventional meaning. Here is how it works. Note: you can only Redouble if the last bid was a Double.

INTERVENING TAKE-OUT DOUBLE
Partner opens the bidding one of a suit. The next opponent Doubles; it is your turn to bid. If you have 10 or more points Redouble. It does not matter if you have support for your partner’s suit or if you have a good suit of your own. First Redouble. You can bid later. The opponents could be in trouble. They are either forced to bid or to let you play in a
Doubled / Redoubled contract. And if they do bid you or your partner might be able to Double them for penalties and take them for a telephone number.

THE JORDAN CONVENTION
This has nothing to do with basketball or the river. Your partner opens the bidding and the next opponent Doubles. Again if you have 10 or more points you can Redouble. But this time, using the Jordan Convention, if you have 10 or more points and a fit in partner’s suit instead of Redoubling bid 2 No Trump. Without the fit and 10 or more points just Redouble.

OTHER BIDS (LESS THAN 10 POINTS)
If your partner opens one in a suit and there is an intervening Take-Out Double you can always Pass with a weak hand (less than 7 points) and no fit with partner. But if you have suit you can bid it at the one level or preempt at higher levers. You can support your partner’s suit at the two level or preempt in your partners suit at higher levels.
