ANSWERS                      TEST XIII

1.C or 6 H;      2.D or 5 S;      3.S
4.D;                 5.H                     6.D or 5 H

7. Bidding: North opens 1 D and East overcalls 1 H. South with a 5 card Spade suit bids 1 Spade. West passes and North supports South by bidding 2 S. South carries on to game with 4 S.
Opening Lead: J H
Count losers: 1 S, 3 H, and  1 D for a total of 5 losers.
Plan: trump 1 Heart losers in Dummy; and dump the other Heart loser on a Diamond.
Play: win the J H lead with the Ace and play a Heart. If East now leads a Spade or a Diamond, East gives up a trick. So East leads the J C. South wins and plays the 4 D. East takes the A D and returns a Club. South plays a Heart and trumps in Dummy. A Spade to the King then a Spade to the Ace. Now the winning high Diamond is played and the last Heart loser is dumped. The Q S will be  the defenders last trick. South lost 1 S, 1 H and 1 D; making 4 S.

8. Bidding: South opens 1 u and West overcalls 1S. A negative Double by North shows  a 4 card Heart suit. South bids 2 Hearts and North  carries on to game with a 4 H bid.
Opening Lead: K S
Count losers: 1 S, 1 H, 3 D and 1 C for a total of 6 losers.
Plan: set up the Club suit  by taking the finesse. On the two extra Club wnners in Dummy, dump the 2 Diamond losers.( Diamond losers can also be trumped in Dummy.)
Play: win the opening K S lead with the Ace and play the Ace and King of Hearts. Now take the Club finesse: play the Q C and let it ride. East wins and plays Spades. South trumps the third Spade lead and plays Clubs throwing away the 8 and 6 of Diamonds. The defenders will eventually take the A D and Q H and   with the K C will have a total of 3 tricks. South makes 4 S
